Boys Varsity Cross Country

     Coach Symons enters his second year as the Eagles Head Cross Country Coach.  He was born and raised in Shenandoah County Virginia and graduated from Strasburg High School.  In high school he ran cross country and track with experiences at the district, regional, and state level.  Following graduation Coach Symons attended Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va.  He ran cross country and track and was fortunate to have experiences at the conference and NCAA South/Southeast regional level.  Upon graduation Coach Symons earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and teaching certifications in Early Education, Emotional Disturbances, Intellectual Disabilities, and Learning Disabilities. He began his teaching career at Grafton School, Berryville, VA.  In 2001, Grafton recognized him with a distinctive “Excellence” award for his service to  individuals with special needs.  Later Coach Symons accepted a Special Education teaching position with Frederick County Public Schools at James Wood Middle School.  After several years in the classroom he became the school’s first Intervention Resource Teacher.  Coach Symons continues to serve this role entering the 2014-15 academic year.  In 2008, he was Teacher of the Year for James Wood Middle School, and nominee for Frederick County Public Schools Teacher of the Year.  In 2012, Coach Symons earned his Masters of Education with a certification in school library media from Longwood University, Farmville, VA.  At James Wood Middle School he served as Assistant Cross Country Coach from 2003-2005 and Head Cross Country Coach from 2005-2012.  In 2012, Coach Symons became an Assistant Coach at Sherando High School.  From 2005-2012, he was Head Girl's Track and Field/Distance Coach and currently serves as Head Boy's Track and Field/Distance Coach at James Wood Middle School.  He has coached three cross country championship teams and six track and field championship teams.  In addition, Coach Symons has coached four individual cross country champions and fourteen track and field distance champions.  When not teaching or coaching you will find him training for competitive running events, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, camping, supporting his church, or reading.  He currently resides in Stephens City, VA.
